Doing business in China can open up significant opportunities. Yet many entrepreneurs still believe that the hardest part is simply finding a supplier.
In reality, that is only the beginning.
A supplier may offer a good price and still be unsuitable for your project. You also need to verify its production capacity, the actual quality of its products, payment terms, lead times, required certifications, and how it handles problems when they arise.
Finding a supplier is not enough
Platforms such as Alibaba, 1688, and Made-in-China make it possible to find thousands of companies in just a few minutes.
But there is a real difference between finding a name and identifying a reliable partner.
Before working with a supplier, we seek to verify, among other things:
– its actual business activity;
– its experience with the product you need;
– its ability to produce the required quantities;
– whether its prices are consistent;
– the quality of its samples;
– its production lead times;
– its commercial terms.
Negotiation covers several points
The unit price matters, but it is not the only point to negotiate.
You also need to consider the MOQ, payment terms, packaging, lead times, customization options, spare parts, and sometimes delivery terms to the freight forwarder.
A slightly more expensive product can ultimately be far more profitable if it reduces the risk of defects, delays, or problems after delivery.
Quality control remains essential
Even when the first sample is good, the final production run must be inspected.
Depending on the project, this may include checking quantities, appearance, dimensions, functionality, packaging, or certain technical documents.
The objective is simple: identify problems before the goods leave China.
