The Foshan region is also a major center for furniture and bedding. That is one more reason to buy with a method: a mattress is judged on the inside, and you cannot see the inside in a photo. Here is what we ask before recommending an order.
1. Which type of mattress do you want?
- Spring: pocketed springs or Bonnell springs, with different behavior and prices.
- Foam: the density and quality of the foam change everything.
- Latex, memory foam, or hybrid (springs and foam).
- The height, the firmness level and, if needed, a two-sided mattress.
2. Dimensions
Bed sizes are not the same from one market to another: North American sizes (for example Queen or King) are not the metric sizes common in China. State the dimensions in centimeters and inches, the height, and check them on the sample.
3. Materials: ask for the composition in writing
- For foam: the density and the type, with a material sheet.
- For springs: the type, the count and the wire diameter.
- For the cover and padding: the fabric composition and the comfort layers.
Always compare the sheet to the sample, and the sample to the manufactured lot.
4. Certifications and market requirements
- Flammability: every market has its own rules. In the United States, for example, the federal rule 16 CFR 1633 applies to mattresses. Check what applies to your market before ordering.
- Emissions and substances: certificates such as CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 exist. Verify the certificate number with the issuing body, not only on a PDF supplied by the factory.
5. Compressed packing
A mattress can be vacuum-compressed or rolled, which greatly reduces its volume in the container. It does not suit every type: ask the factory which models can be compressed and for how long, and check that the mattress recovers its shape.
6. Freight is calculated by volume
The cost depends mostly on the volume occupied, so on the mattress type and its compression. Ask the factory and your forwarder how many mattresses fit in a container before comparing prices. For the method, read our guide Shipping from China to Africa: How to Estimate the Real Cost.
7. Inspection before loading
- Dimensions, height and weight of a sample from the lot.
- Stitching, finish, zipper and labels.
- Smell when the bag is opened, and compliance of the legal labeling for the market.
- Opening one mattress from the lot to compare the inside with the approved sample.
